Top Tile Tips for First-Timers [PART 3] - Trend vs Style

As Oscar de la Renta famously said, “Fashion is a trend. Style lives within a person.” And as I like to say all the time, “Who the heck cares what Brenda from next door thinks is trendy? Is she paying for this renovation? Shove off, Brenda.”

Okay so maybe you won’t come across my quote on Pinterest but I like to think Oscar and I are on the same track. An extremely common question we get asked here in store is “So, what’s trendy?”

Once upon a time, Brenda's avocado bathroom was very trendy.

Trend, by definition, is the latest fad or fashion. Some examples of the latest trends? Marble or copper ANYTHING, hexagons, subway tiles, Pokemon Go.

Style, on the other hand is defined as “characteristics or elements combined and expressed in a particular (often unique) and consistent manner.” Things that are always in style? Neutral colours, classic furniture pieces, functionality, good manners.

Basically, you don’t want to design your entire home in the latest trends only to realise 6 months down the track that you actually can’t stand marble hexagons but you’re stuck with them AND your copper dog kennel. It’s much wiser to stick to the classics for any large investment (like tiles) and switch out small accessories/ towels/art whenever you feel it’s time to freshen up a little. New trends really come and go so quickly. Remember those pants that had the snap things up the side? SNAP PANTS.

Snap pants say "sometimes I need to take my pants off REALLY quickly"

So what’s right for me, you ask? Well, consider your project. Is this an investment home you’re hoping to sell in the next 6 months? If so, you can definitely get away with being a little trendier to attract buyers on the lookout for what’s hot in the market (consider: every episode of The Block). If this is your “forever home”, or at least for the next 10 years, it’s a much safer bet to go with a more classical style and pick up the trends each week at Kmart.
Marble snap pants, anyone?
